Energy efficiency project

We are EVOVOLUTION ALLIANCE, looking after the well-being of New Zealanders by providing healthy living conditions.

The Energy Efficiency Project is a collaboration by the GNZCC, the BMWK, and BRANZ for a pilot project for an energy-efficient retrofit. The project is the first of its kind in New Zealand.

The project primarily targets social housing, where a need has been identified to bring the existing stock to healthy home standards and in line with the actual and updated requirements.

What’s the issue?

One in five New Zealand homes is damp. 56% of rental properties are affected by dampness and mould, including social housing.

Multiple factors cause these issues, including ageing and inadequate infrastructure, with much of the social housing stock needing retrofitting since the 1970s and 1980s, meaning houses were no longer fit for purpose. It also means tenants are more likely to be exposed to health issues, including respiratory illness.

These problems can multiply into poor health and social inequality while the existing infrastructure no longer meets the “Healthy Home Standards” set by the New Zealand Government.

In addition to possible health issues in the most vulnerable communities, current housing, in many cases, no longer meet the energy efficiency standards set by the New Zealand Government.

How can the Energy Efficiency project help?

Kainga Ora, New Zealand’s primary social housing provider, estimates that 40,000 state houses will need retrofitting in the next 20 years. The Energy Efficiency Project will pilot much-needed technology to the construction sector and housing providers. The aim is to provide a turnkey, German-quality solution tailored to the New Zealand market.

The Energy Efficiency Project combines cutting-edge technology solutions and knowhow from Germany including:

  • insulation

  • ventilation

  • windows & doors

  • heating & hot water

  • envelope sealing

The aim of the pilot project is to provide solutions in retrofitting, minimising times, costs, and disruptions to the tenants.
